Seed Starting
Don't worry if you missed last month's Kids Garden Fresh workshop on seed starting. It is still a great time to start some seedlings in your classroom. Information to get your class started can be found here.
Gardening To-Do List: January 16th to January 21st
- Try soaking some seeds overnight before starting indoors. Lettuce, Swiss chard, parsley, and carrot might benefit from the treatment.
- Start the following plants indoors now through February: broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage.
- If using floating row covers, check to see if seeds planted in the fall have germinated yet.
- If using a cold frame, check the soil temperature and dampness to determine when it will be ready to plant. Temperatures should be at least 40 degrees to germinate seeds.
- Use the seeds that were sprouted in the window as a healthy snack. Kids may not like radishes, but the sprouts might suit their taste buds.
- Develop a garden plan with students. Determine what will go where for both spring and early summer. Check last year's plan to rotate in different crops.
