Growing Healthy Kids Grant

Eligibility

Child care homes or centers may apply for a Growing Healthy Kids Grant only if they are a member of United 4 Children ( A 2011 merger of Child Day Care Association and St. Louis for Kids.), participate in the Child and Adult Care Food Program and are within Gateway Greening’s service area. Gateway Greening’s current service area includes St. Louis City and the areas west to I-170, north to the Missouri River and east to the Mississippi River, with projects in underserved areas given priority.

Timeline

Applications are available in the fall, due in December and awarded in early February, with gardens being installed by March.

 

2012 Growing Healthy Kids Grant Timeline

October 4, 2011

New and Expansion applications become available.

December 2, 2011

Completed applications are due.

December/January

Selection Process: GGI and United 4 Children conduct site visits to applicants.

February 4, 2012

Awards Ceremony, GGI Office, 2211 Washington Ave.  63103

February-April, 2012

Gardens are installed and trainings completed.

May-November, 2012

Follow up visits and trainings conducted.

What providers will do:

  • Develop a realistic long term plan by outlining a garden plan they will be able to maintain
  • Provide volunteer support and labor needed on the installation day, and to maintain the project, including planting, watering, weeding throughout the season and upcoming years
  • Provide menu reports to United 4 Children, including food served from the garden
  • Provide annual evaluations and progress photos to GGI

What Gateway Greening will offer:

  • Assistance with project planning, coordination and installation
  • Plant materials, including free vegetable and herb seeds and seedlings
  • Opportunity for yearly expansion of projects
  • Technical assistance such as garden visits, educational workshops and trainings
  • Ongoing technical support at Bell garden on Saturdays, 9am-1pm

What United 4 Children will offer:

  • Assistance with menu planning and recipes that include garden-grown foods
  • Child nutrition education trainings
  • Tracking and reporting worksheets
