About Youth Programs

Students participating in Gateway Greening's Youth Programs

Gateway Greening works to involve at-risk youth in sustainable food production and garden-based education to meet the diverse needs of schools in partnership with neighboring communities. There are over 60 school gardens in the St. Louis area supported by Gateway Greening.

Youth Garden Grant

Students participating in Gateway Greening's Youth ProgramsGateway Greening supports active vegetable, sensory, native and butterfly gardens at over 60 local schools, giving young people the opportunity to experience first-hand planting, tending and harvesting-reaping the rewards of their hard work. Teachers, staff, parents and volunteers apply yearly for a Youth Garden Grant to receive materials such as lumber, soil and tools. With assistance from Gateway Greening Staff, we build the garden together. The ownership and garden responsibilities stay with the school or community group to enjoy for years to come, with continued support and education opportunities from our dynamic staff and volunteers. School Greening Grants are available yearly in early spring and due in May. For an application, please contact Steve Eigsti, Youth Programs Coordinator,  at 588-9600 ext. 24
