Demonstration Garden on Bell Ave
Watch, Learn, and Dig In
Known as Gateway Greening’s outdoor office, the Demonstration Garden is a thriving community resource for urban agriculture activities. It features 20 garden demonstration beds and shares its space with Bell Garden, a traditional community garden. Visit to learn more about gardening, borrow tools, or to volunteer.
What happens to the food grown at the Demonstration Garden?
A former Gateway Greening employee once said, “Your work should sustain you,” and the Demonstration Garden is a living example of this principle in action. In an average year, the Demonstration Garden’s 20 communally maintained raised beds produce about 1,500 pounds of food that is shared with volunteers, staff, and often donated to a nearby soup kitchen. Because volunteers pour their sweat into the garden, we feel it is important that they get to taste the fruits of their labor.
The Demonstration Garden is also home to the Carriage House and Community Coop.
The Carriage House
The Carriage House (3815 Bell Ave.) serves as an indoor/outdoor community garden-learning center.
The Community Coop
The Community Coop is home to urban chickens whose eggs are donated to local food pantries, underprivileged families and volunteers. The coop also offers classes for kids and chicken keepers. The Easy Chicken provided our hens. The Easy Chicken
