What I Do At GGI: I work with the executive director, schedule meetings, assist in preparing financial reports and development reports for monthly committee meetings. I greet callers and visitors to the office. On a daily basis I am responsible for processing the paperwork of the office: invoices, checks, mail, letters, petty cash and timecards. I make at least one trip a week to the garden to drop off paperwork, pick up mail, or run errands as needed. I order office and cleaning supplies, schedule the weekly office cleaning assignments. I am responsible for maintaining our donor database and working with the development specialist with appeal mailings. I work some of our special events usually at the registration and cashier table. I help out whoever needs help.
Background: I have a high-school education, and have attended some training classes for Raisers Edge. In high school I always knew that I wanted to be a secretary because I always felt that it would offer me the greatest amount of variety on a day to day basis. My schooling has really been 40 years of on-the job training. The majority of my computer knowledge has been self-taught, trial and error, and some basic computer classes.
I previously worked at a non-profit called Sacred Heart, which produced public affairs programming that aired weekly on radio stations across the country. At Sacred Heart I worked with the executive director, development director and did receptionist and accounting work. Prior to Sacred Heart I worked at a local radio station in their accounting department, then on the FM side of the station working with the station, program, sales, promotions and the traffic/copy manager. Through the years most of the work I have done is very similar to what I do here, really the only difference is the atmosphere, the co-workers, the procedures, and the final goals. I have gained a lot of knowledge working here at GGI. I like coming to work at GGI because I enjoy working here and I believe in what we do.
Personal: I was born and raised in St. Louis and I love living in the city. My father was from Mexico so maybe that’s why I was attracted to a guy from Mexico. Javier and I have been married 37 years. We have four children, Chris, Angie, Alicia and Javi. Chris and Alicia live and work in New York, Angie is married, has a daughter and she lives and works in Chicago, and Javi lives and works in St. Louis. I visit them at least once a year, more often if I can.
